| Communities - education |
To assist with the development of the local skills base, we continue to concentrate a great deal of our community-based projects on giving assistance to improve the educational facilities near our ports. We help to facilitate the acquisition of educational equipment for local schools and support educational trips, competitions and learning initiatives. We feel that it is important for children to have a comprehensive appreciation and understanding of both our business and the role our ports play in the regional and national economy. To foster this understanding, we host port visits and tours for local schoolchildren. A number of our ports offer work experience to local schoolchildren and students to facilitate a better understanding of business in general and the ports industry in particular. In a limited number of our ports, it is also possible to apply for apprenticeships, work placements and graduate work-experience programmes. Engineering apprenticeships take place at the South Wales ports and the Port of Hull, electrician apprenticeships at Ayr & Troon and Grimsby & Immingham and a four-year apprenticeship programme is on offer at Newport and Swansea. |
