Start of Junior Race at the ABP Newport Marathon and 10K 2023
Hot off the heels of the London Marathon, the countdown is on for the ABP Newport Marathon Festival, which returns this Sunday (28 April) to the streets of Newport. With the addition of a brand-new half marathon and a wide range of races on offer, this year’s event promises to be an unforgettable celebration of running, wellbeing and community spirit.
More than 7,000 people have signed up to take part in one of the various race categories, which includes the full 26.2 miles, a half marathon, 10k and junior race options. From seasoned athletes looking to achieve a personal best time on this famously flat course, to first-time runners seeking to challenge themselves, the event caters for all levels of ability and experience.
This year has also seen the introduction of the Newport Marathon 100 Club, which sees race organisers Run4Wales gift 100 free spaces into the 10k and half marathon to help people improve their health and wellbeing.

For ABP, being good neighbours to the communities surrounding our ports is important to us, and what better way than supporting one of Wales’ premier mass-participation events.”

This is all while raising vital funds for Ty Hafan, an important charity ABP are supporting, dedicated to supporting children and families in south Wales.”
Matt Newman, Chief Executive at event organisers Run 4 Wales, said: “We’re so excited to kick off our new look ABP Newport Marathon Festival, which has only been made possible with the support of Associated British Ports, Newport City Council and the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.
“The weekend is set to be even bigger and better than before, and we can’t wait to welcome participants and spectators to not only enjoy the new races but all the supporting activities and on-course entertainment too.”
ABP’s ongoing sponsorship of the Newport Marathon Festival is a key part of the ABP Series, a programme of support for mass participation wellness events close to its port locations in 2024. These include Southampton, Cleethorpes (near ABP’s Humber ports of Grimsby and Immingham), Cardiff, and Ipswich. Events, which are open to all, include two marathons, four half-marathons, three 10K runs and two 5K runs. There are often inclusive events for children and families alongside the main events.
For those not participating in the races, there is still a chance to get involved as volunteers, known as the Extra Milers, who play an essential role in making sure Run4Wales events are a success.
