Communities come together to watch the first ABP Humber Coastal Half Marathon

September 8, 2017

This weekend saw Cleethorpes beach buzzing with excitement as thousands of people attended to watch and support the first ABP Humber Coastal Half Marathon.

Over 1600 runners snapped up tickets in just over 48 hours of them being released which meant that the seafront event was fully sold out.

Thousands of pounds were raised for charities during the event and race organisers, Tape2Tape have also pledged to financially contribute to several of the local community groups that supported the race, including the RNLI, Binbrook scouts, Grimsby Rotary, Grimsby Air Cadets and the local Sea Cadets groups.

Many local residents, lined up along the barriers to cheer on their family, friends and other people taking part in the tough challenge.

A team of 200 marshals were placed around the course who kept the public safe during the event and who cheered on the runners at multiple locations along the route.

Simon Bird, Director for ABP Humber said: “We have wanted to help organise a large sporting event like this for such a long time and this weekend’s event made all of the hard work worth it. The community spirit was immense as spectators cheered, clapped and encouraged the runners over the finish line. It really was a fantastic event which we’re all very proud of.”

Upon finishing the race, competitors received goodies such as a free ice-cream and stick of rock along with a bespoke medal and drawstring bag.

Neil Pattison, Race Director for Tape2Tape said: “We are so pleased that everyone had a safe and enjoyable time during this race whilst taking in the great views along the route. The finishing arch framed the iconic Cleethorpes pier perfectly and I really do think that the location added that little bit extra to the whole experience.”

He continued: “We would like to thank ABP for their amazing support with this event, their staff worked really hard to provide great logistical support alongside the 200 plus volunteers from the local community, everyone involved has contributed to the success of this fabulous event.”
