Health and safety

We are committed to achieving the highest standards of health and safety throughout our operations.  We review our policies and practices regularly to ensure that they comply with our legal requirements and are consistent with best practice and it is our view that injuries and cases of ill-health suffered at work are preventable.  Our policy and procedures are intended to support continuous improvement in health and safety performance, and they are communicated to all employees and relevant external organisations.

Our commitment to health and safety applies not only to our own operations, but also to the wider ports industry in working to establish the industry-wide targets set under the Safer Ports Initiatives (SPI).  We take a lead role in the activities of our industry’s safety organisation, Ports Skills and Safety Ltd (PSSL), from representation on in its board to involvement in working groups on key strategic issues.

Our shore-based and marine safety management practices are developed and improved through engagement with a wide variety of stakeholders – from employees and other port users to government agencies.  Recently, we have worked with government on the implementation of the International Maritime Organisation International Ship and Port Facility Security Code, designed to protect facilities of strategic importance to the nation.  Each of our ports now has Department for Transport-approved security plans in place.
